What is indoor air pollution?

Clean air is a basic requirement of life. While we all hear about outdoor air pollution, indoor air quality is an area that is gaining increasing focus. Some pollutants and hazardous substances are emitted from buildings, construction materials and indoor equipment. Indoor air pollution is a degradation of air quality through these emissions.

Indoor air quality and indoor air pollution is important, because people spend a substantial portion of their time indoors. In some cases, indoor air can be up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air.

The concept of indoor air quality is, hence, gaining increasing prominence from global health organisations.

What is formaldehyde and why should I be concerned?

Formaldehyde is an industrial chemical used to make different types of products, including home furnishings, household cleaners, textiles, etc. Many the sources of formaldehyde, such as composite wooden products (including MDF/Plywood/laminates), adhesives, carpets, etc., can be found indoors. Hence, the levels of Formaldehyde indoors can be up to 100 times higher than those found outdoors, making it an indoor air pollutant. The United States has gone to the extent of having regulations on the permissible formaldehyde emission limits for composite wooden products. In a Chinese study of 410 newly remodeled homes, 85% were found to have formaldehyde levels greater than the OEHHA guidelines (Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment)

Exposure to formaldehyde can cause adverse health effects. It can affect your health even in low concentrations, like 1 part per million. Formaldehyde can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat. High levels of exposure may also cause respiratory disorders.
