CQ Interviews: Being thoughtful and fashionable with Phoebe Dahl’s Faircloth Supply

CQ caught up with Phoebe Dahl of Faircloth Supply, to know more about her brand, sustainable fashion, her work with the Indian artisans of WomenWeave for the brand’s latest collection, and more!

With an ideal mix of fashion design and philanthropy, Los Angeles-based Phoebe Dahl is taking sustainable fashion and ethical manufacturing to newer levels with her brand Faircloth Supply. The brand’s mission statement – We are your everyday dreamers, working hard towards a mutual success to create clothes that want to be worn, in a world we want to live in – is a comforting declaration of the values it aligns to. Here’s how Phoebe is giving her fashion line more than just a superficial, feel-good factor.

Setting the standard for sustainable fashion with Faircloth Supply

Phoebe: Simply using organic textiles to make garments doesn’t qualify as sustainable. I think of sustainable fashion as consciously created pieces that are made bearing in mind the environmental impact, wellbeing of the people who make the garments, and durability. And this consciousness has always been important to me. So when I started Faircloth Supply, I knew sustainability and ethical manufacturing had to be the essence of the brand. Therefore, we focus on natural fibres such as linen and cotton and ensure the wellbeing of people who make our clothes. We are a team of women, inspired by women, working towards empowering women.

Finding new ways to further the sustainability agenda – Faircloth Supply X WomenWeave

Phoebe: Faircloth Supply’s mission is to work toward ending the global gender gap through empowerment and education. Through Faircloth Supply, we are not only able to donate a portion of proceeds toward girls’ education in Nepal, but also offer sustainable income to women who are partnering with us to produce our collections. Similarly, WomenWeave, a charitable organization in India, empowers women in rural India, teaching them to use machinery and create a sustainable living. It was a natural fit, and so, we partnered with WomenWeave to develop handwoven textiles for Faircloth Supply’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection and the Fall/Winter 2019 collection.

Every garment has so much more meaning now that you know you are directly contributing towards the empowerment of the person who has helped bring the piece to life.

Inspiration fuels collaboration

Phoebe: I tend to find my inspiration from travel and heritage textiles. Since making the decision to shift production to India, I’ve visited the team at WomenWeave a few times, and worked closely with them to select colors and patterns for the gorgeous handcrafted textiles they create using natural fibres and dyes. It is a very collaborative process, and exciting to see what we are able to dream up together. We give the artisans at WomenWeave the creative freedom and encouragement to shine a light on their age-old techniques and bring them to our customers in a modern way.

Infusing a new perspective

Phoebe: Prior to working with WomenWeave, Faircloth Supply was produced locally in Los Angeles using deadstock fabric. The shift to these handwoven and naturally dyed textiles has not only given the collection a new feel, but also a unique perspective. It is heartening to know that there is a story behind what you are wearing. Every garment has so much more meaning now that you know you are directly contributing towards the empowerment of the person who has helped bring the piece to life. This has resonated well with our customers, and the response has been overwhelming so far!
