ColourNext 2018: ‘What Makes a Chair, a Chair?’, a design workshop presented by CQ, at ColourNext 2018

What is a chair? Is it just something you use at dinner or at the office, or is it also the bench you sit alone on for some quiet, in your neighbourhood park? Or is it the unattended pile of clothes in your dorm room, or is it that old trunk that you've thrown a sheet on and made your throne? A chair, is many things. But how do we make one?

CQ’s debut design workshop, ‘What Makes a Chair, a Chair?’ introduces participants to the basics of designing a chair, through play. The workshop intended to question and challenge the idea of what actually makes a chair. Following an introduction of the basics of a chair, the participants were pushed to unlearn and re-imagine a chair, which they then attempted to build out of a set of materials provided, under the guidance of facilitator Aziz Kachwalla.

What ensued?

Participants tell us, it was discarding the idea of what makes a chair, a chair, that made the workshop interesting. The materials provided sparked many starting points, creating wild thoughts. It was no longer a piece of wood with four legs attached! Aziz also repeatedly encouraged the participants to utilise and explore the materials in all possible ways.
It was inspiring to be able to recreate something new from a familiar everyday object.
