Design Indaba kicks off on 01 March, 2017

Touted as one of the best design conferences in the world, Design Indaba was launched in 1995. Every year, the festival brings together creative professionals from around the world for a three-day showcase and conference of creativity. The 2017 edition of the annual design festival would take place from 1st to 3rd March at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa.

The line-up of speakers for the current edition includes Olafur Eliasson of Little Sun, Joe Gebbia of Airbnb, artist Dear Ribane, Jabu Nadia Newman of Foxy 5, Chido Govera and Koen Vanmechelen of Cosmopolitan Chicken Project, Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin of Dokter & Misses, information designer and artist Giorgia Lupi, and musician Kaki King, among others.  The edition itself is being art directed by Senegalese fashion designer Selly Raby Kane

As part of the programme, Design Indaba would also host a FilmFest which will showcase indie and creative films from around the globe. The selected films would be premiering in South Africa for the first time. Under the FilmFest, The Cape Town International Animation and Design Indaba would also launch one of their collaborative projects.

The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa, an annual competition that discusses beauty and the public’s perceptions of it, would also take place during the festival. Ten celebrity influencers would nominate the “most beautiful object in South Africa”, which would be followed by a public vote, and would eventually culminates in an exhibition during the festival.

Dutch trend forecaster Li Edelkoort would hold a Design & Lifestyle Trend Forecast Seminar on fashion, textiles, bio-engineering, home and interior, and design empathy during the festival.

Lastly, this year’s edition would also present The Emerging Creatives programme, an initiative by Design Indaba and the Department of Arts and Culture, to showcase the work of 40 upcoming contemporary South African creative professionals.
