ColourNext 2019: Palettes with Personalities – Colour Trends for 2019

As one of the most trusted repositories for colours and trends, ColourNext’s annual predictive palette has shaped design decisions since its inception in 2003. This year too ColourNext is back with its all-you-need-to-know-digest of colour trends for 2019.

From organic, bio-materials, to mythical, surreal spaces, from meme-inspired aesthetics coming to life, to infusing space with an artisanal aura, 2019 will set the tone for your personality to shine through your preferred palettes.

Harvest – Growing the Future

The organic trend has firmly established itself today. We want the assurance that the food we’re eating is the best possible, natural version of itself; we want to be conscious about not harming the planet, as a way of giving back to Mother Earth. The first trend palette this year, Harvest, is perhaps an extension of this – bio-curios – as designers turn into alchemists, harvesting living materials!

In its arsenal are radical new materials obtained by experimenting with algae, bio-polymers, bacterial cellulose etc. Materials that are revolutionary, organic, and designed to degrade – sustainable innovation – materials such as Malai Biomaterial Designs’ vegan leather, fungus-based Mycellium, and Yoko Shimizu’s Biocellulose series, for instance. With shades of White, Purple, Green, Pink and Red with Brown undertones, interiors are bound to invoke an organic touch, complemented with textures that reflect inner structure of organic matter – nature as art, and the artist!

Enchanted – Surreal is Real

Real life can be quite a drab. For most, it is. The ‘wake up, work, eat, sleep, repeat’ routine can truly suck the joy out of life itself, and perhaps as a means to combat this, our imaginations are taking flight and how! Take pop culture for instance. We escape our boring reality and binge on movies, books, and TV series that range in genre from mythical, fantastical, to the downright surreal. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things… you get the drift. The Enchanted palette validates this surreal world we create in our heads, and manifests it as interior design that is mythical, vibrant and outlandish.

Step into the dream

Whimsical dreamscapes of Enchanted are inspired by dense forests of feral flowers, magical creatures and a handful of stardust.

Blurring the lines between the real and the imaginary, the trend celebrates the spectacle of life in all its lush wilderness. Bright colours juxtapose harmoniously to draw in your attention. Shades of Purple, Green, Ochre Yellow, Blue, Salmon, and Brown with vivid textures and patterns help create the ephemeral dreamland that is whimsical yet comfortingly familiar, maximal yet not over-the-top, bold yet not ostentatious.

Adulting – Never Grow Up

Adulting is hard, but it doesn’t have to be; not if you never grow up! If you just nodded in agreement, and instinctively thought of the Roll Safe meme, this one’s for you. The palette comes alive irl from kitschy cool illustrations we love online, with inspiration from memes, pop culture, and everything that we stand for as a generation that is redefining growing up.

Why grow up? Adulting

The palette is all about being bold, creative, and fun

Adulting, That’s my aesthetic

The palette is very meme-inspired, kitschy-cool

The light, modular and comforting shades of Bentonite, Dark Ash, and Cream from this trend are perhaps symbolic of the random but compelling need to adult from time to time. Juxtaposed again this are crazy, perky hues of Coral, Lime, and Oriental Blue, reflecting the inner child that likes all things bright and bold, distracting attention away, even if only temporarily, from the ‘responsible adult’ we’re supposed to be. The overall palette is creative, bold, funky, and doesn’t take itself too seriously – just like us millennials and Gen Z folk. Chillax broseph, we’re busy enjoying our Iced Coffee and Avocado toast.

F-lux – new codes of luxe

The perception of luxury has changed over the years. From how expensive something is, the question now is how much does it contribute towards enriching someone’s life, and how much of an emotional value does it have. Is it local? Does it have a story? Does it celebrate its creator, or the craft? Does it have flaws that make it unique, one of a kind? Connoisseurs of luxury are now seeking a real connection with their materialistic possessions – a personal touch that is thoughtful, authentic and experimental. Just like the F-lux trend palette.

Luxe, redefined

The concept of luxury has been overhauled

Raw, rustic beauty

Luxury now is all about a personal connection with materials and objects, and their makers

The idea is to celebrate a luxury and richness but in a subtle, muted manner. Unassuming but confident shades of Brown, Grey, Sand, Maroon, and Green along with artisanal textures such as hammered metal or handwoven silk highlight the palette’s understated, sophisticated aesthetic. The timeless palette shuns trends in the favour of a more classic style that pares materials down to their basic, bare essentials. Natural forms and flaws are celebrated, highlighting the intrinsic beauty of materials and textiles that are opulent in a rustic way.
