CQ Interviews: Watches that tell a story – meet the makers of Bangalore Watch Company

Husband-wife duo Nirupesh Joshi and Mercy Amalraj founded the Bangalore Watch Company in 2017, leaving behind their tech-industry careers. Having lived in Seoul and Hong Kong, and having travelled around the world, they spent a lot of time looking at high-end luxury watch brands and wondering why there wasn’t an Indian name in that illustrious list! CQ speaks to them about the art and science of fine watchmaking.

What inspired you to start a watch company?

We started Bangalore Watch Company out of a singular desire to reacquaint the world with fine watches of Indian origin. In India, HMT, Hegde and Golay, Titan etc. are all great watch brands with a cult following, but none of them are in the fine watchmaking league of the world.

Watch brands from around the world can be grouped in four main categories depending on how they create identities for themselves. First, as high jewelry, haute horlogerie brands like Greubel Forsey, Bovet, and Speake-Marin for instance; the Swiss are regarded as experts in haute horlogerie. Second, as high-quality brands with a history such as Patek Philippe, A Lange and Sohne, and Jaeger-LeCoultre for example. Then, as watchmakers led by a strong brand image, such as Omega, Rolex, and Breitling. Lastly, as high-quality brands with unique, niche cultural identities like Farer, and Bremont for instance.

Bangalore Watch Company belongs to the fourth category in this classification. Our watch collections draw upon India’s history, languages, culture, and tradition, to design and produce our world-class watches adhering to the highest global standards.

Tell us more about the design, technology, and engineering of Bangalore Watch Company watches.

Our first collection, the limited-edition Renaissance Automatic pays tribute to classic, understated watches from the mid-century. It is a vintage-inspired collection of mechanical-automatic watches. The inspiration comes from Indian as well as Swiss brands of that era. The collection has a superior build quality with surgical grade steel, citizen automatic movement, 100 meter water-resistance, and Sapphire crystals used as components.

There are timepieces, and then there are heirlooms. What are your thoughts?

High-end watches are often thought of as heirloom pieces. However, heirloom pieces are, often times, ordinary material possessions that are precious because of the memories they represent; a Rolex watch with no emotional value attached to it doesn’t automatically become an heirloom piece by virtue of simply being a Rolex. After all, a watch’s journey doesn’t start in a factory, but at the wearer’s wrist! That being said, the quality, longevity, and durability of an object worthy of being an heirloom is important. So we build our watches to stand the test of time, and hope they get passed down as heirlooms.

Tell us about the response Bangalore Watch Company has received, and plans for the future.

The open market, increased disposable incomes, higher spending, increase in international travel, and people’s understanding of global brands have changed drastically over the past decade. Most watch brands from around the world are now either available for purchase in India, or can be pre-ordered. It is a great time to be talking watches in India! The response to Bangalore Watch Company has been very positive. We’ve shipped hundreds of watches both in India and overseas. We plan to follow-up by launching a women’s collection in the first half of the year, and another men’s collection in the second half of the year. The brand’s future is very exciting!
