SPIN combines Wood, Metal and Nordic Design to create furniture

In 2014, Delhi-based retail design and shop-fitting company Shark Designs realised that they couldn’t find any furniture in the Indian market that matched their sensibilities – simple, original, and minimal. Whatever they found was either too inferior in quality or too expensive. And that’s how the seeds for SPIN were sown. Various brainstorming sessions (on design, product line, packaging, pricing and branding) later, the prototyping began in 2016 with a formal launch early this year.

SPIN plays with a combination of metal and wood (White Oak and White Ash, sourced from Europe and Malaysia) to create its line of unique furniture. The furniture is absolutely different from the usual furniture available in the Indian market. Drawing from Scandinavian design sensibilities, SPIN furniture is characterized by minimalism, craftsmanship and functionality.

“Metal brought in an exciting dimension of technology and modernity to the process and end product. Instantly gone was the boxiness – a default byproduct of the traditional interpretation of Indian hardwood furniture,” says Avenish Jain, co-founder and director at SPIN. Colour is another important factor that makes their furniture stand apart from the usual fare. Bright hues and colour blocks including yellow, red, turquoise, etc. make the furniture instantly refreshing and appealing.

Talking about the making of their products, Jain gives the example of the ‘Stencil Bed’. “The brief to the Design team was to create a comfortable bed with non-boxy presentation and Nordic sensibilities. The first cut was stylish, sturdy yet slim and steeped in minimalism. Since our design team consistently interacts with production team, we are usually able to get the functional or production issues sorted beforehand. Rectifications, if any, happen before submitting proposals to the Product Heads. In this case too, the prototype passed its analysis stage minus having to revisit the design step.” he says.

Convinced that the product in question was through with ideation and production checks, their next step was to arrive at a competitive price-point that was fixed as Rs. 45,899 for the bed. “Once the ideation, production and price determination were over, Stencil beds were given a go ahead to roll out the final production,” he adds.

Talking about the learnings from the mother company Shark, Jain says, “Our design and production teams draw from their rich experience of making shop-fittings for Shark’s global clientele like Armani, DKNY, Diesel, Nike, Superdry and Puma, to name a few. We create products that look simplistic and for that the manufacturing process entails a certain level of technical understanding and expertise. The Shark experience makes sure that our people are well-versed with the journey that starts from a conceptual design and ends with a tangible product.”

The company is now working on blending other materials in addition to wood and metal. They want to evolve into more than just being a furniture brand. “In fact, at the recently concluded India Design ID 2017, our lifestyle knick-knacks like egg-toast rack, desk organizer and set of trays generated a fabulous response cum conversion,” says Jain. They are also planning to add more “globally in vogue” colours to their palette. While the furniture is only available on their website right now, they are soon planning a foray into the offline world.
