The World Architecture Festival dwells on the concept of performance in architecture

The World Architecture festival will be celebrating its ten year anniversary with the theme, ‘Performance’. This year, the festival explores the idea of performance and architecture. WAF combines seminars, programmes, awards and live presentations making it an interactive and wholesome experience, alongside providing budding architects with great opportunities to explore the field of architecture, present their works and be recognised.

The World Architecture Festival will be held at the Arena Berlin in Germany from the 15th to the 17th of November. The Festival is a space for the global architectural community to meet, celebrate and be inspired. The format for the festival includes seminars, live presentations, Berlin city tours and the eagerly awaited World Architecture Festival Awards.

The theme for this edition of WAF is ‘Performance’.  The seminar programmes have renowned speakers from various architecture and design or allied fields who will be discussing performance architecture. The opening keynote will be given by Rafael Viñoly, of Viñoly Architects followed by seminar talks by other prominent names in the field such as Alison BrooksKim CookJason Flanagan and Richard- Francis-Jones. These seminars will highlight the theme by discussing various topics such as the idea of performance, how it applies to architecture, performance spaces, digital performance and the progression and development of architecture in the modern time.

Christopher Hesse, an architect and urban designer will be talking about the collaboration of natural and man-made in an architectural context. He will be speaking on exploring ideas to successfully combine natural and man made environments and the role of nature in building. The founders of famous indian architectural firm MORPHOGENESIS, Manit and Sonali Rastogi will speak on the role of environment in architecture. They will focus on details closer to home, for instance, the various aspects of environmental performance and whether it can be achieved in Indian climatic conditions. They dwell deeper into the statistics of the job wherein they highlight the need for strategies, results and measurements.

The WAF awards follow a unique concept, wherein the participants present their projects in front of a jury and an audience. The WAF awards are the most awaited event of the festival, the nominees for which include some famous architectural firms from around the globe.

Mathias Kohler, co-founder of Gramazio Kohler Architects discusses the involvement of new technologies such as robotics and how it could affect the performance of a construction industry. Another interesting topic we look forward to, is the one of Movement Spaces by Charlotte Skene Catling of Skene Catling de la Peña Architects. The idea of how movement, in terms of human activities, informs architecture and whether performance depends on the scale of an architectural project.

WAF also has a section which organizes tours around the city discussing the many architectural landscapes present there.

The WAF awards have a unique concept. The finalists are chosen via live presentations that the shortlisted participants make. These live presentations can be attended by all festival delegates to gain further insight. The Awards shortlist for 2017 features renowned international and domestic firms and projects. Leading firms such as BIGHeatherwick StudioZaha Hadid Architects and Wright & Wright Architects have projects which have been shortlisted along with projects by Indian firms such as Sanjay Puri ArchitectsKSM ArchitectureBlocher Partners and Archohm Consults.

The World Architecture Festival aims at bringing together architects and designers from around the globe to collaborate, discuss and generate new concepts and techniques that have been and are yet to be explored.
