Maison Deco, a Deco-inspired apartment in South Bombay

Art Deco`s pursuit of beauty in all aspects of life was directly reflective of the newness and usage of technology rather than traditional crafting methods to produce many objects. This apartment pays homage to the city of Bombay, its Art Deco Boulevard and the principles of this era.

The Wooden Jaali that greets one right at the entrance

Details such as CNC-milled pine wood shutters, an exquisite leg detail for the clear glass dining table, elaborately designed headboards and a pink backsplash for the kitchen are elements of the project where we have embraced technological innovation, modern materials, mechanisation and attempted to emphasise them in the overall aesthetic of the style itself.

Warmly Lit Areas that bring the family together

The clients wanted us to design a functional yet simple 3 bedroom apartment. We turned towards Art Deco to infuse the functional elements with artistic touches that are symmetrical, geometric, streamlined, often simple and pleasing to the eye.

CQ&A #02 ft. Maison Déco by MuseLAB Design Engine

Behind the illustrious and aesthetic assignments that seem to materialise before us as fully finished projects, are long hours, meticulous attention to detail and lots of effort to bring it together. With CQ you get a glimpse behind the curtain and into the process that leads to making of these creations. With each video, CQ&A brings you a look at architecture and design, explained by the designers themselves.

The Maison Déco, apartment started with a simple brief; three bedrooms and a large lounge area for entertaining and relaxing. With these simple directives in place, MuseLAB Design Engine looked to Art Deco for inspiration. Their aim was to contemporise it.

The 1920’s style aesthetic sees the apartment host various patterns, colours, textures and finishes from pintuck upholstery to smooth coloured suede. These elements play well with the space to create a sort of fluidity from one room to the next.

Though opulence is a prominent feature, the apartment is also warm and inviting. The interesting room accents, such as a flying pig mounted on the lounge wall, along with the customised artworks and colour details, act as conversation starters and contribute to the overall affable quality of the home.

Maison Déco has a stunning flooring, composed of three types of stone: A grey Bardiglio marble, black Granite and Jaisalmer yellow. These three stones interact with each other in different arrangements to fabricate interesting visual effects and contrasts. Light too plays an important role in accentuating this play.

While the Deco-inspired home certainly references the iconic movement, it remains a modern, functional and luxurious space for the family.
