CQ&A #06 Architects, and the love for designing products ft. Material Immaterial and MuseLAB

Through the course of a project, an architect takes on many roles, from being a negotiator, a draughtsman and often also a product designer. But architects don’t always have to design their own products. Then why do they do it? Why is it that architects love to design every aspect of a space? Is “doing it all” always the best idea?

Why do so many architects venture into the allied field of product design? Material Immaterial and MuseLAB Design Engine share their thoughts on the matter.

Formally trained as architects, Nitin Barchha and Disney Davis founded their architecture studio White Room in 2006. Subsequently, they also established Material Immaterial – a stand alone studio – for their explorations of materials and design. The 2 studios although housed under the same roof and run by the same founders, work on vastly different styles and products.

Is it a matter of having complete control? Or is it because product design is how they express themselves, sans the clients?

MuseLAB Design Engine was founded by architects Huzefa Rangwala and Jasem Pirani. The architects, whilst working on architecture or interior design projects, found themselves designing or curating every nook, cranny and artifact of it. Aside from their wide array of architecture/interior design work, they also run MuseMART, a sister segment of MuseLAB, but for beautifully crafted, purposeful products.

We speak to them to hear their side of why they love designing products. Is it a matter of having complete control? Or is it because product design is how they express themselves, sans the clients?

Hear their somewhat-contradicting but somewhat-congruent reasonings for yourself.
