Barometer

Located in Kothrud in the cosmopolitan city of Pune, Barometer was envisioned as a benchmark when it came to the design of restaurants and bars. The space feels informal and rustic, is equal parts a neighbourhood bar and a street-side café, and is designed by Pashmin Shah and Satyajeet Patwardhan of Amoeba Design. The design makes use of a restricted material palette of concrete, metal, wood and glass. Watch the video for more.

Ageing as gracefully as a vintage car

Stained in the WoodTech Melamyne finish, the wooden surfaces create a comfortable vibe at all times. It also fits well with the narrative of a vintage car because wood as a material is known to age gracefully.

During the day, natural light rushes in through the large windows accentuating the concrete finish of Royale Play Archi Concrete on the walls and the Melamyne wood finish of the furniture. The space carries a different vibe from how it presents itself after sundown.

The design of Barometer draws its inspiration from the metaphor of a vintage car. The old-world charm, rustic finishes and cozy interiors make for a space that ages gracefully and gets better with time. (Photography by Pulkit Sehgal)

At night, the ambient lighting dims out the surroundings, spotlighting the dinner tables, the guests seated and their organic conversations. The wood shines in this light, bringing out the rich texture of WoodTech Melamyne. (Photos by Pulkit Sehgal)

Royale Play Archi Concrete suits Barometer’s personality as a community space, inspired by speakeasies and neighborhood bars around the world. It is fuss-free and an all-time classic, as it looks stylishly worn-out. (Photography by Pulkit Sehgal)

Royale Play Archi Concrete adds a beautiful concrete finish to the walls. At night, Charlie Chaplin movies are projected on one of the same walls. The stillness of the concrete finish is enhanced by the theatrics of the films. (Photos by Pulkit Sehga

The play of art within the space adds an interesting twist. Everyday kitchen implements are showcased as wall-hung wire art. The connection it makes is at once intimate and playful, validating the idea of a friendly kitchen. (Photos by Pulkit Sehgal)

Barometer is a rustic yet classic space that combines the ease of a neighbourhood bar with the polish of a young café. There is a sense here that time slows down and the calmer energy of conversation takes over. (Photos by Pulkit Sehgal)

For a contemporary bar that seeks its inspiration from vintage spaces, Barometer has a welcoming character – deep absorbing finishes and a mix of rough and smooth – that’s popular with its regulars. (Photos by Pulkit Sehgal)
