A museum enables us to relive our past culture, celebrate local art and inspires us with its exceptional architecture. So, when Interspace, one of Bengaluru’s first interior design firms dedicated to corporate interiors, was commissioned for this novel project, it was no surprise. This vision of Infosys Ltd., a global organization with an Indian DNA, to showcase the traditional architecture of Kerala with a museum & art gallery in its Thiruvananthapuram campus, was ably executed by Interspace.

A graceful reflection of Kerala’s inimitable ethos & traditional architecture.

Spread over approximately 7600 square ft., the Infosys Museum & Art Gallery incorporates the essence of Kerala into the property in an innovative way. The flawless blend of traditional materials and techniques with stories that celebrate local culture helped create an engaging experience for visitors and the workforce of Infosys. For instance, the murals painted entirely with natural colours using traditional techniques depict scenes from local folklore & mythology.

Its climate greatly influences traditional Kerala architecture. It incorporates vernacular architecture – a type of indigenous architecture that features local traditions and cultural practices and uses local materials and knowledge. The characteristic verandah all around the building protects external walls from sun and rain, and an internal courtyard brings a better flow of air and natural ventilation. Natural building materials like stone, timber, and terracotta work best in this climate.

“Although we focus on contemporary workspaces, our passion for working with art and artisans helped us to design a unique space at the Thiruvananthapuram campus of Infosys,” shared Mr Shetty. The museum and art gallery is a proper synthesis between the lasting value of past heritage and modern architecture. Sloping tiled roof, wooden rafters and columns, carved doors and windows and open layout spaces speak the language of a vernacular style mixed with the finest impulses of contemporary ideas.

Mr Shetty explains why the museum and gallery exteriors were his favourite space to work on. “We had our limitations concerning interior walls, which is for the display of art, artefacts and paintings. The interior walls were kept pristine white with a high roof to avoid any distraction from viewing the art pieces.” Apart from the painted mural, the main terracotta mural made with a firing technique depicts Thrissur Pooram, a magnificent spectacle merging Kerala's spiritual and cultural essence.

“We believe that quality of product helps enhance the quality of work”, wisely explained Mr Shetty. This is one of the primary reasons for picking Asian Paints products. Moreover, the Interspace team was pleased with the support of the technical staff of Asian Paints. “The site is very close to the seashore. With strong salty winds and water, a few areas of the polished carved outdoor finishes were damaged during the monsoon. The Asian Paints team readily attended to our problem with good service support.”
