Kalyan & Sangeeta’s home is a beautiful reflection of Indian design tailored to suit the sensibilities of four generations. Swati Seraan, lead designer at By the Riverside based in Bengaluru, was faced with the challenge of utilising mammoth-sized idols of Meenakshi Kalyanam and a Ganesh statue in a home that was clearly meant to feel young and modern. The result was a space steeped in contemporary themes and traditional flourishes. The house hosts joyful details and surprises at every turn.

Leading to the bedroom is a corridor painted in ‘Awakening’ – Asian Paints Colour of the Year 2019 – a deep shade of plum that frames the entrance to this beautiful space. Awakening draws the user in, welcoming them into a plush bedroom.

The dark wood and pristine white balance each other. The white, one among the over 200 shades of white by Royale Luxury Emulsion, soothes the elaborate coffered ceiling and wall mouldings. The deep brown wood is polished in WoodTech Emporio PU Clear.

This bedroom romances nature with natural motifs and some colour that create a Neo-Indian vibe. Gulbadan wallpaper from Sabyasachi for Nilaya collection adorns all walls. The motifs of the wallpaper are vivid and floral.

For the study and on the headboard, to get a natural finish, the wood is polished in WoodTech Emporio PU Clear. WoodTech Emporio PU Palette is used on the mouldings and wardrobes for a pop of teal, livening up the room and tying it with the wallpaper.

The bedroom plays with prints and solids. The backdrop is a beautiful Gulbadan wallpaper from the ‘Sabysachi for Nilaya’ collection. It’s floral patterns remind one of heritage and craft while solid colours and curios romance an Indian summer.

While the Gulbadan wallpaper by Nilaya is dressed in warm earthy tones of pinks, orange, burgundy and browns, the wardrobe is a beautiful teal inspired by the skies. The matte teal of PU Palette complements the striking wallpaper.

Wooden flooring is used inside all the rooms of the house. The daughter’s room is dressed in polka-dotted drapes alongside the pretty pink polka wallpaper called Dots on Dots by Asian Paints Nilaya.
