  • Principal Designer: Swati Seraan

Kalyan & Sangeeta’s home is a beautiful reflection of Indian design tailored to suit the sensibilities of four generations. Swati Seraan, lead designer at By the Riverside based in Bengaluru, was faced with the challenge of utilising mammoth-sized idols of Meenakshi Kalyanam and a Ganesh statue in a home that was clearly meant to feel young and modern. The result was a space steeped in contemporary themes and traditional flourishes. The house hosts joyful details and surprises at every turn.

Shades of tradition yet a modern approach.

This home, designed for a well-traveled family is an alluring mix of traditional Indian references like temple architecture, classical music and the arts. The overall palette is neutral with the comforting familiarity of wood – finished in WoodTech Emporio PU Clear and PU Palette.

Leading to the bedroom is a corridor painted in ‘Awakening’ – Asian Paints Colour of the Year 2019 – a deep shade of plum that frames the entrance to this beautiful space. Awakening draws the user in, welcoming them into a plush bedroom.

The dark wood and pristine white balance each other. The white, one among the over 200 shades of white by Royale Luxury Emulsion, soothes the elaborate coffered ceiling and wall mouldings. The deep brown wood is polished in WoodTech Emporio PU Clear.

This bedroom romances nature with natural motifs and some colour that create a Neo-Indian vibe. Gulbadan wallpaper from Sabyasachi for Nilaya collection adorns all walls. The motifs of the wallpaper are vivid and floral.

For the study and on the headboard, to get a natural finish, the wood is polished in WoodTech Emporio PU Clear. WoodTech Emporio PU Palette is used on the mouldings and wardrobes for a pop of teal, livening up the room and tying it with the wallpaper.

The bedroom plays with prints and solids. The backdrop is a beautiful Gulbadan wallpaper from the ‘Sabysachi for Nilaya’ collection. It’s floral patterns remind one of heritage and craft while solid colours and curios romance an Indian summer.

While the Gulbadan wallpaper by Nilaya is dressed in warm earthy tones of pinks, orange, burgundy and browns, the wardrobe is a beautiful teal inspired by the skies. The matte teal of PU Palette complements the striking wallpaper.

Wooden flooring is used inside all the rooms of the house. The daughter’s room is dressed in polka-dotted drapes alongside the pretty pink polka wallpaper called Dots on Dots by Asian Paints Nilaya.

The black-and-white mural and the sturdy wooden brown are balanced by gentle pink creating an air of whimsy in the daughter’s room. The reflective surfaces of the wardrobe open up the narrow entrance, a trick used to good effect in many modern homes.

Coated with Asian Paints’ WoodTech Emporio, this wooden partition with an assortment of solid and louvered panels is a piece of art. Seen through its slits, a traditional Indian painting in warm orange tones sits austere against the grey wall.

The mirrored backdrop to the dining area creates the illusion of a sweeping space while the wooden louvers curb it from dominating the space – a treatment similar to the daughter’s room where wood has been used to punctuate large reflective surfaces.

): The entrance re-creates divinity and sets the tone of the house as modern yet traditional. The rustic grey of Royale Play Archi Concrete pairs beautifully with the Sadarahalli temple stone and the Meenakshi Kalyanam idol, creating a divine aura.

The Veena, seen here as a decor item and an artistic element, is an elegant contrast to the rustic grey of the Royale Play Archi Concrete finish, a texture that's popular among many architects and interior designers in the country.

): A beautiful melange of greys is obtained using Asian Paints Royale Play Archi Concrete at the entrance. A hand-drawn black-and-white portrait works in tandem with the monochromatic palette.

The balcony reimagines the outdoors, indoors. The quintessential Indian ‘Jhoola’ (swing) adds to its charm. Complementing a colour palette of warm woods and burnt orange, the ceiling is finished in a refreshing shade of Indigo blue.

Kalyan & Sangeeta’s house was a challenging project for Swati Seraan. The brief was to create a home with an Indian spirit and a modern language. The design team not only answered the brief but also customised the home to suit its diverse occupants.
