Residence at Alipore

In the hot and humid weather of Kolkata, in a building that’s old, the architects at Epsilon led by Bipratip Dhar designed a fresh new home. By using simple straight-line designs and an interesting contrast of matte and gloss surface finishes. This 3BHK apartment is home to a multigenerational family and uses deep browns, soothing cream and neutral whites; and reflective surfaces for visual continuity and to cleverly create the illusion of space.

Creating a new home from old space.

The project was the revamp of an old apartment interior to a luxurious new home with lots of light and breathing space. Reorganising the space and using materials intelligently without overusing anything, was the main challenge.

The architect has deftly used warm colours like Cold Coffee, differing surface treatments and a play of light to enhance the perceived volume of the space. The glossy surfaces combined with the straight lines of the walls maximise the impact. (Photos courtesy Epsilon)

In the bedroom, a high-gloss flooring is paired with muted colours enhancing the space. The glossy wooden surface uses WoodTech Polyester, a clear coating that offers a smooth finish and excellent stain resistance. (Photos courtesy Epsilon)

The colour palette is mainly shades of brown: light brown for walls and flooring, and a dark wooden finish like WoodTech Melamyne. The varying degrees of brown and cream are punctuated by splashes of green and blue. (Photos courtesy Epsilon)

The play of light in the house helps to create the illusion of space along with reflective surfaces. Long, narrow corridors appear larger by using reflection on both sides, and the effect is surprising. (Photos courtesy Epsilon)

Large openings that bring in natural light into the space are strategically placed. Shades like Asian Paints Eggshell, along with varying degrees of natural and artificial light bring life into a space. (Photos courtesy Epsilon)

The bathroom is a potpourri of colours and textures From the gloss of WoodTech Polyester to the rustic wall tiles and the yellow floral accents, various elements come together to create a wholesome effect. (Photos courtesy Epsilon)
