Masala Room is a restaurant located in Hubli, Karnataka, designed by Magic Oxide Design Studio. Mrinmoy Chang who leads Magic Oxide introduces us to the uniqueness of designing in a tier-2 city. Masala Room is inspired by the rich colours, flavours and tonalities found in a typical spice market. He uses traditional implements as décor items – implements that are now rarely seen in our kitchens – to evoke a sense of nostalgia, with interesting light features that highlight suspended elements.

Inspired by a quintessential Indian spice market.

The name ‘Masala Room’ evokes fragrances, flavours and sights from a vibrant Indian spice market. This was the starting point for the design – a cabinet of spices showcased as a design element.

The material palette for Masala Room comprises wood, finished in WoodTech Polyester and walls textured with Royale Play Dune in a metallic shade that resembles sand. The ambiance comes alive with this ensemble of finishes, artefacts and the play of light. (Photos courtesy Magic Oxide Design Studio)
