Sandwiched between roads and buildings, Ardee School was a 4-year old space that Space Matters renovated to its current avatar. While most schools in Delhi boast of ample open spaces, Ardee School had a single courtyard. Classrooms spill onto the courtyard to maximise the open space. The most prominent feature is the metal mesh wrapped around its exteriors. It screens the building from pollutants and nearby buildings. Plants and climbers are potted in the gap between the mesh and the building.

The school needed to be given a visual identity to distinguish it from buildings in its vicinity. The red signage and pavilion do just that. Metal mesh softens the overwhelming white paint on the large exterior form. Exposed concrete on the boundary wall maintains a neutral colour tone. The white paint on the mesh façade is Asian Paints Apex, a weatherproof emulsion that can withstand extreme weather. The interior walls have been finished in Emulsion paint primarily and Enamel paint in places.

The school is sandwiched between buildings with little open space around it. Hence it was imperative that the school be given a visual identity that distinguishes it from the buildings in its vicinity. The school building is wrapped in a customised meta-mesh. The red signage and pavilion call out to us from far, while metal mesh softens the otherwise overwhelming white paint that runs throughout the large exterior form. The exposed concrete finishing on its façade maintains a neutral colour tone. The white exterior paint all over the façade is Asian Paints Apex, a weatherproof emulsion that can withstand the extreme weather of Delhi.

The design uses colour ingeniously, such that it doesn’t disrupt the space or feel overpowering. Light wood, grey and white ensure a canvas that is orderly; the neutrals are offset by bright yellow alongside deep shades of orange and blue.

Ardee School has little open space in its surroundings making the inside courtyard a key feature. The courtyard wall is clad with greens and punctured with scattered windows. Vibrant frames coloured in Enamel paint bring in a sense of play.

For Ardee School in Delhi, the architects at SpaceMatters had to convert a vacant 4-storeyed structure into a ‘world-class’ school within a matter of a few months.

The interior design incorporates as much greenery inside the school’s complex as possible. In the cafeteria, plants are stacked against walls. While they don’t hinder movement or activity, they simultaneously accessorise the space.

The use of white paint in the interior walls coupled with light wooden furniture ensures that the users, the students, stay undisturbed. The lime green accents add a pop of freshness without being distracting.

It is imperative that learning areas cue a sense of discipline and decorum. The Ardee School achieves this sense of order with the ample use of white paint but offsets it with wooden furniture adding texture and contrast.
