Sandwiched between roads and buildings, Ardee School was a 4-year old space that Space Matters renovated to its current avatar. While most schools in Delhi boast of ample open spaces, Ardee School had a single courtyard. Classrooms spill onto the courtyard to maximise the open space. The most prominent feature is the metal mesh wrapped around its exteriors. It screens the building from pollutants and nearby buildings. Plants and climbers are potted in the gap between the mesh and the building.
The design uses colour ingeniously, such that it doesn’t disrupt the space or feel overpowering. Light wood, grey and white ensure a canvas that is orderly; the neutrals are offset by bright yellow alongside deep shades of orange and blue.
Ardee School has little open space in its surroundings making the inside courtyard a key feature. The courtyard wall is clad with greens and punctured with scattered windows. Vibrant frames coloured in Enamel paint bring in a sense of play.
For Ardee School in Delhi, the architects at SpaceMatters had to convert a vacant 4-storeyed structure into a ‘world-class’ school within a matter of a few months.
The Reddy Residence in Hyderabad is a renovation project where an existing space was transformed into a vibrant new home.
