Chikoowadi in Ahmedabad derives its name from a sapodilla (chikoo) farm where it’s located. The nine existing chikoo trees became the starting point of the design of a home for six, where every window overlooks chikoo trees. Dreamscape Architects chose a natural colour palette – exposed concrete walls on the exteriors, black oxide flooring and white walls in the interiors. The home with its meandering space, water-bodies, courtyards, gardens, and a cantilevered staircase is a sensorial treat.

Chikoowadi, inspired by natural elements

Finished in the colour of the chikoo fruit, the exterior is protected by Asian Paints Ultima Protek that prevents dampness, algae and cracks. Exposed concrete walls on the exteriors and black oxide flooring complement features like water-bodies, courtyards and the lush gardens.

All wood in the house is polished with products from the WoodTech range. The main spaces in the house make use of Nilaya Wallcoverings for the feature wall.

The bedrooms take a slightly different route from the rustic finishes. Here, the décor leans towards refinement. The interior wallpaper from the Asian Paints Nilaya collection stands pretty against the black-oxide flooring and solid white ceilings.

While the home takes cues from traditional courtyards and uses rustic finishes in its public areas, the private areas like the bedrooms are resplendent with colours owing to the interior wallpaper from the Asian Paints Nilaya collection.

The minimally embellished house finds an accompanist in straight lines etched in metal. The composition of concrete finishing against the wood and glass bar-table with the metal barstools is perhaps a visual melody in its own accord!

The architects consciously chose to highlight the trees and greenery in the semi-open areas. The exposed concrete finishing adds a subtle hint of texture and contrast while the dark floors underline the rustic composition to perfection.

While most of the home is finished in natural textures, some walls are clad in interior wallpaper. Wallpapers from Asian Paints Nilaya collection are used in the master-bedroom, son’s bedroom and the formal living area.

The courtyard borrows from the traditional ‘pols’ of Ahmedabad. Dressed in neutral colours, a coat of Asian Paints Ultima Protek keeps dampness, algae and damage through weathering at bay.

The rustic wall finishing and floor in the shower is yet again contrasted by planters. The exposed concrete adds a subtle hint of texture and contrast while the dark floors spotlight the greens.
