Arshad and Maria
Set in the sleepy village of Saligao, surrounded by lush green fields, Casa Zen is quite literally like a burst of sunshine with its white-and-yellow exterior. Lovingly restored by Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti, this 150-year-old Portuguese style home exudes happiness at every corner. Part of the eighth season of Asian Paints Where the Heart Is, the villa is not just a weekend getaway for the couple but a reflection of their personalities—playful, warm and utterly unique.
The journey of restoring Casa Zen was personal and entirely hands-on. In 2021, they took on the challenge of bringing the old structure back to life, preserving its heritage while making it their own. “Between Warsi and me, we’ve built three homes together from scratch, with many, many arguments in between,” Maria says with a smile, offering a glimpse into the passion and occasional chaos that fuelled the process.
Every decision, from hunting down hand-painted, Portuguese style Azulejo tiles in Bicholim to commissioning stained glass windows by an artist in Mumbai, was made with care and intent, resulting in a space that feels as vibrant and grounded as the couple themselves.
Every corner of the house is filled with treasures—family heirlooms, antiques and keepsakes that speak of their life together. “This house is like a big, fat album of our life,” Arshad says. “It doesn’t end—you just keep adding to it.” For those who want to infuse bold colours, playful patterns, embrace eclectic décor and personalise their space, Maria’s approach to interior styling is full of inspiration.
