5 Popular Types of Modern Kitchen Designs

Before you make up your mind about the modern kitchen design that is just so you, here’s a quick look at the shape of things when it comes to kitchen layouts

The right kind of modern kitchen is so much more than just that—it can be that perfect source of creative inspiration, be the space to foster close connections or just simply provide the ambience to allow you to de-stress. Which is why, when it comes to finding your perfect kitchen room design, it’s good to consider all possible aspects. When it comes to modular kitchen design, the all-important element, before you consider anything else, is the kitchen layout. Just as a strong, durable building cannot be built without a great foundation, a modern kitchen cannot be designed without the right kind of layout.

THE U-SHAPED KITCHEN LAYOUT

If you have allocated a lot of room for your kitchen, then this versatile layout is the way to go. Here, cabinets, drawers and countertops occupy three walls. It’s large enough to comfortably accommodate two or more cooks and just the thing for you if you need a lot of storage space and expansive countertops for differentiated workspaces.

Comfortably spacious, this versatile layout encourages your culinary skills with its distinct workspaces.

If you love spending time in the kitchen, channeling your inner chef and experimenting with recipes (cooking or baking), then opt for this layout. It is also ideal for large families who enjoy bonding over food. If needed, the cooking and preparation area can be separated and an island can also be added in the middle (more about that further down in the article). And if you want to avoid a boxed-in look, adding interesting accents and décor elements will take care of that. Do plan your budget well, though; being elaborate, this layout can be a bit more expensive than other options.

THE L-SHAPED KITCHEN LAYOUT

This kitchen layout accommodates storage drawers, cabinets and countertops across two walls. It’s considered ideal when it comes to functionality and is a good fit in small- and medium-sized kitchen spaces, and for a single occupant. In this L-shaped layout, the corner space is maximised, which also makes it very space-efficient.

As a general rule, the longer side of the L should be reserved mainly for meal preparation. And if space permits, you can create multiple work zones and an island as well. This is great for someone who wants to keep everything handy and enjoys some alone time while cooking. You may be a tad bit disappointed when it comes to décor, however, as this layout doesn’t provide scope for much—too many elements can make the space look cramped. And here’s a hint if you want some more space for moving around—overhead cabinets!

THE STRAIGHT-LINE KITCHEN LAYOUT

Have a smaller space and big dreams for a great-looking kitchen? Fret not. The straight-line kitchen design works best in smaller spaces. As the name suggests, all appliances, cabinets, drawers, the sink, the hob, the chimney, and everything else you need are arranged in a straight line, against a single wall.

Assembled in a queue, this kitchen is designed for single use, clutter-free and optimally efficient spaces.

It’s the go-to- choice if you’re on a budget, keeps the kitchen clutter-free and maintains optimum efficiency. This layout works best for single occupants staying in studio apartments. Depending upon the available space, you can even place a dining table near the kitchen arrangement.

THE PARALLEL KITCHEN LAYOUT

Often termed as the most efficient layout, the parallel kitchen layout has two long working areas against parallel walls. If your kitchen space is long and narrow, then this kind of layout will be right at home. This design not only provides plenty of countertop area but also ample room for drawers and cabinets. In a parallel kitchen layout, shelves are a better choice. Do keep in mind, though, that when you’re arranging your appliances, there is enough room for you to open doors. Remember to install enough lights in the right place to ensure functionality.

THE ISLAND KITCHEN LAYOUT

There is that word again. The island is a versatile addition to your kitchen. As a kitchen layout, it has the advantage of good looks and better efficiency. Installing an island adds another work surface to a kitchen and divides a large kitchen into smaller working areas. Set a few stools around it and just like that, the island transforms into an eating spot, gathering area or general hangout space where friends and family can congregate (especially in a large kitchen).

You can add an island to any kind of kitchen as long as is enough space to freely move around it. Cabinets, drawers or even wine coolers can be integrated into your island. But when you plant an island within your kitchen, make sure it matches with the rest of the design. Add in some pendant lights and you elevate the aesthetic of the space and illuminate your island too.

THE ALL-IMPORTANT TRIFECTA

While these fundamental kitchen layouts certainly help when opting for a kitchen renovation, always ensure you’re sorted when it comes to the ‘triangle of efficiency’, where the oven, fridge and sink—the three most important kitchen components—are within easy reach. In an ideal kitchen interior, you get the benefit of great looks as well as the advantage of high efficiency. The typical modern kitchen design aims for a clean and clutter-free aesthetic, from the kitchen wall to other kitchen components. So do consider your specific requirements and personal aesthetic before opting for your kind of modern kitchen design, whether it’s a remodel or a brand new one. You will be the one spending time in it and using it to the fullest, so only settle on the kitchen design idea that will make you comfortable and happy. It is, after all, the very heart of a home.
