House waterproofing

The Pros and Cons of Torch on Membrane Waterproofing

Waterproofing your home is an indispensable task of the construction process to prevent any water-related problems like leaks, cracks, dampness, and mould growth from showing up in the future. Today, there are ample waterproofing solutions readily available to you. Depending on the area of water damage or any potential water-related problem, you can pick the appropriate solution. One of the most popular building waterproofing solutions is torch on membrane waterproofing. It is often used for waterproofing roofs.

Roof waterproofing  can be a challenging undertaking. Instead of the instant water wicking that happens on sloped roofs, flat roofs are significantly less effective at removing excess moisture and are likely to pool water as they age. Torch on membrane waterproofing attempts to reduce the damage that results from such problems. Do you wish to learn more about torch on waterproofing? This is the blog for you!

What is a torch on membrane waterproofing?

Torch on membrane waterproofing is a building waterproofing solution that consists of bitumen and various modified polymers. When applied to a structure’s surface, it can help prevent moisture and liquid from penetrating through, which, if neglected, can have a negative impact on the building’s structural integrity. It is a sheet membrane waterproofing system that provides an excellent waterproofing solution  for the roof as well as other surfaces that are subjected to ponding (the collection of water on a flat surface). Trust torch on membrane waterproofing to deliver reliable and long-lasting waterproofing solutions for your property, ensuring the protection and durability you need. Torch on membrane is also resistant to toxic vapours, chemicals, and other potentially hazardous substances.

Types of torch on waterproofing membranes

  1. Atactic Polypropylene Plastic Modified Asphalt (APP):
  2. The asphalt in APP is processed with an elastic plastic that is engineered to withstand high temperatures, making it the ideal choice for those looking for improved sun and UV radiation protection. In the context of application, if heated with a torch, APP melts more easily than SBS sheets.

  1. Butadiene Styrene Styrene, or SBS:
  2. Made of rubber-modified asphalt, this type of torch on membrane is more elastic than APP. It has greater flexibility in cold temperatures and can withstand changes in weather and temperature, as well as contraction and expansion stresses.

How a torch applied waterproofing membrane works

Torch on membranes use two primary layers for working: the substrate layer on the surface and the thermofusible film of the membrane itself. The thermofusible film is a kind of plastic adhesive that melts when heated.

The membrane is designed to form a barrier on top of the surface that prevents water from passing through.

How to apply a torch on waterproofing system

To make the process simpler to understand, let’s divide the torch applied waterproofing system into two points:

  1. Surface Preparation
    • • Clean the surface of any debris, moisture, or any other substance that can prevent the membrane from adhering to the surface.
    • • Ensure that all the plumbing, carpentry, and other similar tasks are completed.
    • • Make sure that the roof has a slope of a minimum of 1%, that is, 10mm per metre.
    • • The roof should slope in an even and continuous direction towards the drains.
    • • A gentle slope around the drain is needed to prevent wrinkles on the membrane once it has been laid down.
    • • The substrate should be primed with a bituminous coating at a rate of no less than 5 square metres per litre.
  2. Installation of a torch shield waterproofing membrane
    • • Unroll the sheet of membrane. Continue up the slope with more rolls.

Pros of using a torch for waterproofing

  1. Torch on waterproofing membranes provides a green roofing option that may help you reduce your carbon footprint.
  2. The application is fast and clean, with little noise and no toxic fumes produced..
  3. They have an exceptionally long lifespan and have been proven to be durable. .
  4. Torch-on membranes can provide weatherproof protection from the sun, wind, and rain. .
  5. Since an array of neutral finishes are available, a torch shield waterproofing membrane can protect a building without hampering its visual appeal. .
  6. Torch-on membranes are not carcinogenic, toxic, water-soluble, or biodegradable. .
  7. They are suitable for full-immersion applications like subsoil, box gutters, and flower beds.

Cons of using a torch for waterproofing

While a torch applied waterproofing membrane offers many advantages, it does have a few minor drawbacks, like:

  1. Even though the long-term costs of things like maintenance and repair are relatively low, the initial costs can be significantly high as compared to other methods.
  2. One cannot install a torch for waterproofing membrane without the assistance of a professional contractor.

FAQs

  1. Is torch on waterproofing good?
  2. Yes! A torch on waterproofing membrane provides a sturdier and highly durable membrane which in short, increases its lifespan. However, you must know that if the torch on waterproofing membrane is not applied correctly to the surface, it can be exposed to possible water seepage through the gaps.

  3. How thick is torch on membrane?
  4. A torch on membrane is typically about 4mm thick.

  5. What is a torch used for waterproofing?
  6. A propane torch is used for waterproofing membranes.
